DROPS Aqua and Sand

DROPS. AQUA E SAND SET.jpg

As spring is already bringing new life, a new couple of paintings belonging to the DROPS series has come to life. Their names are AQUA and SAND and, as usually, they are inspired to a peculiar natural feature, namely the river and the sand.

DROPS. AQUA AND SAND (7).JPG

The river carries within itself a special symbolism, corresponding to the creative power of Nature and Time. So it recalls both fertility and the passage of time itself, thus carrying a sense of loss and oblivion. The water in the river is characterized by continuous movement, and it finds its own way through the Earth's surface, and even underneath. A river is born as a small bubbling mountain stream, and during its route can become a waterfall, a rapid, a basin, or a majestic and placid flow ending with a delta merging into the sea or the ocean. Moreover, almost all great cultures and cities have been born on river sides. So, where are you now in your life? Is the water of your river calm or raging? Are you heading to your goal, finding your way in life or are you doubtfully bending backwards? Or maybe you are exploring your path to your origins, or have become a carsic river. You can also sit on the sand of the shore and watch the water flow.

DROPS. AQUA AND SAND (3).JPG

While sitting on the shore, you can play with the sand. The sand is strictly connected to the earth but its mineral origin gives it a special quality, as well as different colours and shiny reflexes. Sand can vary in colour and temperature; from the river's and ocean's wet and fresh shores to the desert's hot and sandy wastelands. And even though life might seem impossible to manifest, animals and plants can live in the sand. You can also walk on the sand, leaving your imprint, feeling the weight and movement of your body, choosing a direction. The sand is also related to something ephimeral or intangible, like time running by in an hourglass, or like dunes pushed by the wind and moving in the desert. A desert is where you feel the openess, the infinite access and possibilities. It's the realm of abstraction where human beings can feel a relation with God. Have you already traced your path in sand? Where are you bound? And have you found a spiritual dimension?

Dove sei diretta? E hai trovato una dimensione spirituale?

Playing with water and sand is a playful and necessary activity for the human being. You can create bricks and build whatever you need. This is what mankind has been doing since the beginning of time.

DROPS. AQUA AND SAND (14).JPG

As you might already know, the series of paintings called DROPS is the inspiration for the WEARABLE ART project. The paintings AQUA and SAND make no exception, so let me introduce two new scarves of the collection. The first is tuquoise and the second has a earthy colour.

The scarves will be available during the Milano Design Week 2018, as you can read in this post.

Le sciarpe saranno disponibili durante la Milano Design Week 2018, come puoi leggere in questo post.

These artworks were made with watercolor and ink drawing on Italian Fabriano 100% cotton paper. They measure 27.50x19.7 inches, that is 70x50 centimetres.

BOTANICA. Grass and Violet

BOTANICA. GRASS (18).JPG

I created this little bunch of artworks exactly one year ago, but I was so busy I didn't even have the time to write a post about them. They actually are a continuation of the two large paintings called DROPS. Grass and Violet, and are inspired by the same observation of Nature during Springtime.

DROPS. COAL E FEATHER

DROPS COAL E FEATHER WEB.jpg

Today I'm introducing two paintings belonging to the series called DROPS: COAL and FEATHER. These artworks complete each other in some ways, and will tell you a story of Yin and Yang, cold and warm, light and heavy, hard and fluffy, taking place both in the dephts of the earth and in the highest sky. This is the season when the night becomes longer than the day, cold days are bound to win over warm ones and the dark is stronger than the light. But only until the shortest day, the winter solstice, that will be in December 21st this year.

The painting DROPS. COAL tells you a story about the night of times, 300 millions of year ago and more, when incredibly huge forests made of uncommonly enormous and weirdly shaped trees lived upon this earth, bearing a small range of species but changing our world forever. These forests were made of plants called Lycopsids, that have inspired the tree of the painting.

DROP. COAL. detail.jpg

The plants that were in the carboniferous period were very strange and most of them were almost leafless until they grew older because they did not branch until fully grown, and would have spent much of their lives as unbranched poles. Just to get an idea, they vaguely resembled to plants present in a tropical climate, since they grew in swamps. Some of them, called Lepidodendron, had tall, thick trunks covered in closely packed diamond-shaped leaf scars, composed of green, photosynthetic tissue which made it similar to a giant herb. There were giants up to 50 metres high but, since they had shallow root systems, fell over easily, piling up on one another. This enormous mass of trees sucked carbon from the air, and released oxygen in such a greater quantity than we have today. What is strange is that they didn't decompose because wood eaters microbes did't show up yet, so the carbon stayed in the wood and was not released again into the atmosphere. These plants foxilized and became the enormous source of the shiny black carbon we still use today.

DROP. COAL. detail.jpg

And what about you? What kind of energy is buried inside your past? Where does it come from? Are you going to release it or leave it where it is? What kind of branches did you develop?

E tu?

DROP. FEATHER. MOLTO RIDOTTO.jpg

On the other hand, the artwork DROPS. FEATHER, tells a story of lightness and leads into the magic of flight. Feathers and plumes are the instrument that helps birds in flight, thermal insulation, and waterproofing. Also, their colour always has a meaning in communication, protection and social interaction.

Dall'altro lato, l'opera DROPS.

DROP. FEATHER. detail.jpg

Migratory birds afford each year a long journey to reach warmer lands, driven primarily by availability of food. Migratory birds are funneled on to specific routes by natural barriers and are able to fly over the oceans, crossing continents and covering incredibly long distances that can reach more than 10.000 km. The timing of migration seems to be controlled primarily by changes in day length and migrating birds navigate using celestial cues from the sun and stars, the earth's magnetic field, and mental maps.

DROP. FEATHER. detail 3.jpg

Moreover, feathers are religious objects and have an iconic role, being sacred to many religious and cultural traditions of the world since the beginning of time. Plumage has great cultural and spiritual value symbolising flight, ascension and healing powers, and it has been regarded as both ceremonial and decorative. In Greek mythology, Daedelus the inventor and Icarus tried to escape the maze by attaching feathered wings to their shoulders with wax, but Icarus flew too high and it was melted by the Sun.

IMG_4028.JPG

Can you find something similar in your life? Have you ever taken on a long journey to reach a warmer spot? What is the destination that you want to reach in the next months? What kind of instruments are you going to use to find your path? What route are you going to follow? And ... how will you dress for the occasion?

IMG_4026.JPG

As you might already know, the series of paintings called DROPS is the inspiration for the WEARABLE ART project. The paintings COAL and FEATHER make no exception, so let me introduce two new scarves of the collection. The first is as black as coal with shiny reflexes and the second has a powdery like quality of a tender nude or old rose hue.

Also, they will both be part of the Calendar 2018, which is about to arrive for you as a present, just like every year!

Days get shorter and temperature cools down. Leaves change colour and gently fall to form bright carpets. Soft, oblique sumbeams light up the landscape, especially before sunset. Harvesting days go by and the end of a long hot summer gently lets a little bit of autumn coming in, one day after the other. Many poets, like Keats or Verlaine, have given voice to autumn as a melancholic season, because the golden summer is already gone, the rapidly dimming light makes us feel the need to turn both phisically and mentally inward, and we feel winter days are on the horizon. My feeling of autumn is that of a warm nest to cuddle in, and as the haiku by Kyoshi Takahama marvellously expresses the beauty and richness of this season.

IMG_3478.JPG

Keeping pace with the season, today I'm introducing two new paintings of the DROPS series. The inspiration for these artworks comes, as mostly in my work, from Nature, and focuses on two different aspects of autumn. I usually invent my drawings out of a recollection of the time spent in nature, but this time I wanted to draw two peculiar plants, whose stories recall different experiences.

DROPS. PODS. 600 DPI RIDOTTO.jpg

The first painting tells the story of a seed. A small creature bringing into itself a promise of the future. It was born during the hottest days of the year, from a flower that has taken all the energy of the sun in, drying up and developing a hard capsule to protect its treasure, the seed.

IMG_3479.JPG

Nature expresses itself as a great designer with pods and seeds. They can be tiny or very big, tailed or winged, reniform, ellipsoid, oblong and with many other shapes, with a highly polished surface or very rough. And each shape, consistence or peculiar characteristic has a very specific and only goal: protecting the seed until it will find the right soil and will be ready to sprout. So what is the seed you have nurtured during the last months? Will you be able to do to protect it and help it find its way?

IMG_3480.JPG

The commonest colours for the seeds of the season are brown and black, and that is why I chose this warm, chocolate hue for the painting. The drawing represents a plant whose simple beauty I particularly love, the Ferula Communis. It is widely spread in the mediterranean area, spontaneusly growing at the limit of streets and fields, standing tall with its stout stem that can become more than three metres long, with its big, yellow greenish umbrella flowers that will turn into dark chockolate pods at the end of summer. This is also a mythological plant, and Prometheus smuggled fire hiding it in the hollow rod of a ferula.

LANCISI POST.jpg

The second tells the story of new fruits that are beginning to be born in this season, namely citrus fruits. The first one to ripen is the tangerine, followed by clementines, lemons, grapefruits and oranges in a wide variety of species. The scent of both the flowers and the fruits of this species is incredible, and the foliage is beautifully rich, going from glossy to mat, small to pretty large. This story had to be told using a fresh orange hue fading from intense to pale.

SCIARPE (112).JPG

The two stories are called PODS and ORANGE and belong to the DROPS series, which was specifically created for the Wearable Art project. These paintings were meant to be transformed into high quality textiles, with the aim of becoming warm and colorful scarves to be worn and kept in contact with the body. The new artworks and the scarves will be soon presented during an event that will take place October 7th-21st at Mimi Furaha, in Florence, click here for the invitation.

In the timeless place, protected and hidden by the water, all kinds of creatures come to life, living in cliffs and dephts, reefs and sea valleys, in a multitude of forms and colours. The new two paintings belonging to the DROPS series lead us into this magnificent, secret world.

These two artworks are part of the DROPS series, and are named MARINE and CORAL. They measure 70x50cm and were made on 100% cotton Fabriano paper 300gr, with the technique of watercolour and ink drawing.

Moreover, the watercolours belonging to the DROPS series, where chosen to become something else, to expand and be transformed. Thus MARINE and CORAL were the inspiration for two new pieces of my Wearable Art, two new scarves. The scarves are printed and sewn in Italy, and are made of a soft fabric made of modal and cachemere.

The original paintings and the scarves will be on show during the next exhibition at ROVIDA LAB on August 17th 2017.

DROPS. GRASS AND VIOLET

I cannot help loving Haikus! This one is particularly amazing in expressing, with its undefined abstractness, the ever-changing, inaccurate and growing feeling of Spring. Therefore, after a long winter rest, Nature makes a step forward and life starts flowing again.

Life starts to flow in the fields, where tender leaves of grass sprout. The green is of an intense hue. And among the grass, dandelions, daisies, primroses, violets, grape hycinths bloom.

Matsuo Bashō

As you might very well know from my Haiku Paintings blog feature, I love poetry and I'm particularly fond of Japanese Haiku poems. This very short and elegant form of art, dates back to the 17th century and has a great power to generate images in the reader's mind.

These few lines by Matsuo Bashô are a perfect example of this extraordinary evocative power, making us immediately feel plunged into the microclimate of a pond, with its silence broken by the splash of the frong and the ripples of the water.

This microworld was the inspiration for creating this set of 18 small paintings. They belong to the Botanica series and their name is POND. They are inspired to plants and weeds living near the water, with their very thin or very large leaves, with enormous capsules and very peculiar forms. The colours are very delicate and washy, but still vibrant.

This collection was displayed during my latest exhibition in Via di Mezzo 6 in Florence, so those who visited the show have already seen the series live. It is made of 18 watercolour paintings with ink drawings on paper, and measure 14x14 centimeters.

Hello Spring and Petals

Welcome to that peculiar time of the year when new energies are about to be born, when the sun lingers longer and we just crave outdoor pleasures. But also time to open the windows and let fresh air in, to clear up and declutter, get rid of burdens and redecorate.
It's the time when flowers bloom on the paper on my desk, where colors and light trace bright nature inspired patterns.Tulip, lilac, rose, daisy, daffodil, hyacint, primrose, periwinkle petals.
Tender leaves with a surprisingly strong scent that can be found in hidden pathways through groves or scattered on the fields.
This series of original watercolor paintings measures 8.6x8.4 inches/ 22x21,4 centimeters, is made on a 100% cotton paper made in Italy and is already availabale in my shop.

Wishing you a happy spring,
Francesca

Buona primavera,
Francesca

The making of Petals

Don't you ever feel the need to bring more color in your life? Do you ever get the impression western society is bound to linger between grey and beige hues? Aren't these the colors we refer to when we think of elegance? But it is not the same in countries where women dress in bright colors. Well then, I need an ideal holiday in tropical lands: color is what I need! Our society should really remember to bring more joy to everyday life with bright and colorful hues.

Proof is that when we refer to "natural colors", we mean sober and drained hues, but look at the flowers! Aren't they natural and extremely bright and loud?

Happyness condensed on my desk!

Drops - Summer

These works tell a story of soil giving abundant harvests, of dry, hot air of a raging summer. Of seedlings becoming mature under the sun, of promises made for the year coming. And of golden rains pouring over the fields.

I created an abstract background which was completed with ink drawings. These artworks are watercolor and ink drawing on Italian Fabriano 100% cotton paper. I've created four artworks measuring 11,7x8,3 inches that is 30x21 centimetres.

You can find pics of the making of here and the artworks are available here.

The Nights

"Dark-blue the deep sphere overhead,

Distinct with vivid stars inlaid,

Grew darker from that under-flame:

So, leaping lightly from the boat,

With silver anchor left afloat..."

From Recollections of the Arabian Nights By Lord Tennyson

This new series of paintings is completely inspired to the ancient collection of Asian stories One Thousand and One Nights better known as the Arabian Nights. The collection is a marvellous juxtaposition of voices, characters, places, songs, riddles, Peoples and cultures. And this complexity is what I tried to evoke with the colors and lines.

The artworks are watercolors and ink on high quality 300gr/mq rough 100% cotton Italian paper measuring 50x50 cm ( 19.7x19.7 inches) the 4 square ones, and 70x50 cm (27.50x19.7 inches) the rectangular one.

The titles are dedicated to the charachters of the Tales: Sheherazade, The Magician, Ali Baba, Aladdin, Shahrayar.

They are all available in my shop here

Botanica, Blossom

Honeysuckle scent, Fuchsia blossom, Rose wind and Tangerine sunset. I've just finished working on four new original watercolor paintings of the Botanica series. The drawing is made with ink, the size of the paper is A4. I really love this ever changing series and the infinite, invisible changes of the hues and the shapes. Each living creature is unique.
